“It’s a memory I can smell, almost more than I can see: a huge simmering pot of tomato sauce on the stovetop in my grandmother’s cramped kitchen. Ice and plastic cups squeezed onto the small slice of countertop between it and her sink, while a coffee pot and dish rack took up the rest of her workspace. Mismatched chairs were set around a dining room table, where disposable plates were set; a glass cabinet behind it housed the crystal and china we never used.”
